How we started

During 2016, the University of Kent and Medway Libraries together ran ‘Finding Your Voice,’ a short course encouraging adults to start writing fiction and poetry. Over the course of six weeks a small group of Medway residents began learning the basics of turning ideas into stories. This was followed by the ‘Developing Your Voice’ course. Five of us decided to keep meeting and two more soon joined; The Write Companions were formed! The Write Companions are more than just an eclectic bunch of individuals meeting to share thoughts on writing, we have now become firm friends.
We meet every other week to share projects and undertake various writing exercises, with voluntary homework to keep us engaged in between sessions. Sometimes the exercises will include a specific line, or a general feeling, sometimes we use items or characters and sometimes it’s a mix of it all wrapped up in a specific genre! I always find it amazing how different each story can be when based on the same starting point, and it is from there that this compilation of short stories first stemmed.
